App-Based Learning: MicroLearning at Tory Burch

Challenge

Tory Burch sought a concise yet impactful microlearning experience to bolster collaboration and innovation within the company, tailored for quick consumption during lunch breaks or commutes.

My Role

In collaboration with the Stanford Technology Ventures Program (STVP), I crafted an app-based educational offering, leveraging the Gnowbe microlearning platform, centered on DeBono's 6 hats framework and insights from STVP's executive director, Tina Seelig. My objective was to craft a course that was engaging, diversified in content, yet succinct enough for brief interactions. I wrote all the copy for the course, in Tina’s voice and style, selected images and video, and authored assessments to keep learners engaged.

The Course

I designed the course to follow a simple: tell, show, do, model. First we would explain the framework itself and how it could add value for those who were participating. Then we wanted to show how each “hat” within the framework could be used to further creative exploration or increase innovation within a project. Finally, we wanted learners to “try on the hats” and work through an actual challenge. We called this The Lightning Round and asked learners to try and solve a problem using each of the 6 frames we had previously showed them.

The learners had a great time with The Lightning Round and the apps functionality allowed them to build on each others ideas as they progressed through the course, making a somewhat isolated learning experience feel more connected.

Considerations

The course I developed blended various content types, including text, video, audio, and imagery. With a focus on Tina Seelig's perspectives, I employed previously recorded lectures, podcasts, and published writings, mirroring her unique teaching style. The course's structure, encompassing an introduction to the 6-hat framework, an exploration of individual creativity, and actionable workplace goals, was positively received. Participants praised its effectiveness, making it a highly successful venture with an impressive return on investment.

Course Flow:

  • Defining Creativity: Setting the stage by framing creativity and innovation as the explicit goals of this microlearning experience.

  • Dive into DeBono: Introducing learners to the 6 hat framework, showcasing its potency in sparking creativity.

  • Trying on the Hats: Encouraging participants to reflect on their own creativity, nudging them to see where they fit within the 6 hat framework.

  • Application: Guiding users to set tangible goals, focusing on how to employ their newfound insights to invigorate their workplace contributions.
